SEPTEMBER 4, 2008
Like we said in the last update, here is more audio for your ears to focus on.
You may or may not have not heard any of the Black Cock records, or actually... if you've ever heard Harvey DJ, you've probably heard them, but maybe not realized what they were. Here is the very first Black Cock record from 1993. "Oh, that's what that is?!"
a No Way Back
b Disco Adventure (PT's favorite edit of all time)
Here's a couple of our favorite tracks from the third Black Cock 12", the "Free Range" ep. (note for the trainspotters: "C is for Charlie" and "Here and Now" are swapped/mislabeled on the actual vinyl, we've included the proper track).
a1 Shine On
a2 Here and Now
That's not all... To top it off, we've got an ultra-exclusive mix from Gerry. Not sure on the details, but it did come directly from him and its appearance here is legit. As is Gerry's original famous style, it is mostly low-to-mid-tempo and groovy, with plenty of waay out there stuff. Unusual records from all over the world, psychedelic middle eastern and Indian vibes, foreign weirdo rock, folk and funk... It's a left field monster. I can't describe it adequately, just listen.
Gerry's "Sound Map" mix
Don't forget, the party is this Saturday, that's in just two days on the 6th. We hope you're planning to be there... get your feet in motion whilst that wig gets flipped back!
SEPTEMBER 3, 2008
Woah, the party is THIS SATURDAY! That came up quick, only a few short days away... we do hope everyone is planning on attending this special event! New location, venue information will be posted the day of the party. As always, sound by Sound Factory. Venue has restrooms and refreshments will be available. In case you haven't been paying attention, resident DJ Harvey will be joined by extra special guest Gerry Rooney.
As promised, here's some more Gerry audio to study... this mix was originally posted on the DJhistory.com site back in 2004 as part of their ongoing "mystery mix" series. Here's what they had to say... "Gerry Rooney was born in Liverpool, but raised by wild dingoes in a record warehouse in Akron, Ohio. He has been a record collector for most of his life, a DJ for some of his life, an audiophile for part of his life and a music fanatic for the whole of his life. He is also an occasional record dealer. Gerry is a long-standing cohort of DJ Harvey's and was responsible for the Black Cock releases of ten years ago. He has great musical taste. This is the evidence."

Even more audio goodies coming soon... "Go out and stay out all night..."
AUGUST
28, 2008
On Saturday, September 6th, 2008... a special installment of Harvey Sarcastic Disco featuring a rare appearance of very special guest Gerry Rooney alongside resident Harvey.
Gerry and Harvey together are responsible for the highly influential and collectible Black Cock records. The labels' releases are known as foundations for the resurgence of "left field," "warehouse" and "garage" type of music.
Black Cock was like a voice in the wilderness when it started up in the early 1990s, as it was very unique and forward-thinking for its era. The dance music world of that time was at a crossroads. Disco dub & techno just starting to be heard out at the disco more, but the Black Cock records were edits reaching a bit deeper into "cosmic," "Balearic" & were just a little more fucked up sounding than the others. The records have had everything and anything appear in their mysterious grooves -- disco re-edits inspired by original tape edits from house music pioneers such as Larry Levan and Ron Hardy; strange sound effects and dialogue; to heavy, spacey drum breaks and samples.
While gaining a reputation for being more "out there" than most, at the same time Black Cock was still fun and kept a more tongue in cheek attitude - from it's name, on down to the humorously titled tracks, credits, and logo mascot. However, it might be said that the label was so unique and advanced at one point that in fact, many distributors were unable to move copies and resorted to throwing hundreds of unsold records in the trash bin! Whoops! Fast forward ten or more years and now these elusive slices of sonic mayhem change hands between mania collectors and regularly fetch over hundreds of dollars easily on internet auction sites, as well as stylistically paving the way for a slew of imitators. These days it's not hard to browse thru a glut of modern "left field" "cosmic" "balearic" or "disco dub" re-edits at any well-stocked dance music store, a market that just wouldn't exist if Black Cock hadn't paved the way. Gerry Rooney's roots start in the late 80s, inspired by the acid house cultural revolution, warehouse raves & parties in the UK. He was then drawn to NYC and its music & nightlife scene. He caught the bug and started going on record missions in search of the black gold. No internet back then for information or records. He then began traveling further and further abroad across the USA & Europe in search of audio treasure. Many people don't know that besides DJing, Gerry is also one of the world's best records dealers amongst certain serious buyers. He began record dealing in '89 and from this pursuit he has built a weird & wonderful collection of amazing music from all genres of music and from all different continents of the planet.
He later met Harvey in London in 1988 while attending the Moist night (Harvey & Heidi's now infamous event.) "Fun to DJ at & cool to hang out," sez Gerry. Larry Levan was among other greats to have been guest DJs there at Moist. Developing a friendship with Harvey, the two started Black Cock records in 1992, "as an amusing twist alternative to what was happening at the time." Today the label has become much sought after and the records are all still getting played in Discoland around the world.
Gerry has been a DJ at gigs across the vast spectrum of music over the years: nightclubs, warehouse parties, funky corporate events, festivals, fashion gigs for Stussy, Armani, Nicole Farhi etc, Jamiroquai parties + related events. He has also DJ'ed in VIP rooms, Eric Clapton's 60th Birthday, sleazy dodgy bars & strange exotic dives. Gerry has remained not so much as a general "big room" working DJ, but more of a specialty guy that is hired because of his reputation for eclecticism. Therefore, Gerry tends to DJ at special selective parties & events with either amazing sound systems or for people trying to do the right thing. The list includes 39 Hotel Hawaii, Love in NY, Yellow in tokyo, A Hundred Bird productions in Japan, Sweden, APT NYC, Voices Collective in London, Red Rum in Helsinki, and Plastic people London ("with the super high end turntables that make you tingle!").
We are very fortunate to have Gerry traveling from the UK to Los Angeles and joining together with Harvey live as Black Cock for the first time in the US. Gerry & Harvey have never DJed out billed as Black Cock, and they will be playing all night at the event. Gerry will be bringing his own leftfield selections and recipe for dancefloor madness that you won't hear anywhere else.
You can listen to a two part "classics" mix that Gerry did... recently? Not really sure of the actual origin of this tape, but it was posted on some blog... Stereo somethingorother. Anyway, we hijacked it. Keep in mind, that while Gerry is really known for his leftfield stylings, this one is all classic jams (and is still a great listen.) Enjoy. UPDATE: Regarding the mix, Gerry says, "The mix was from a tape in '94, i only gave it to a
few friends, not sure how it ended up on the net, kinda funny."

Hey

party! It will be on February 18th, at an undisclosed
Los Angeles location. This is just an announcement for the date.
Check back next week for more details, photos, and music. We

Some people out
there in the Los Angeles dance music scene may not realize the popularity
of Harvey worldwide. His mixes and productions are a regular subject
of discussion on interweb messageboards and forums. Here are a few
selected threads to take a look at. Keep in mind, these are not all
of them, and these are only from DJ History and Deephousepage's forums – Harv
pops up regularly on Faith Fanzine's forums as well as a few others.
Make sure to look at the thread that got 15,993 views (no, that's not a typo!).
Even the post announcing this website has gotten 968 views since october 15th.
(UPDATE: sorry, links are now all broken due to other sites moving their forums around... but you still get the idea.)

various bits of reading about the cult leader.
